If you are a lucky person who decided to spend a few days in Amalfi Coast, I bet you would consider visiting Capri, a world-famous fashionista and celebrity island.
Two thousand years ago Capri attracted the first Roman emperor, Augustus, who built here temples, gardens and luxurious villas. And then came his successor, emperor Tiberius, who added even more impressive villas, permanently lived there for the last 10 years of his life and ruled the Roman Empire off Capri.
But centuries later the island’s prosperity declined, and it became the house of the local fishermen. Only in the 20th century it regained its appeal and attracts the world-famous celebrities: actors, artists, writers, composers, political figures etc. ever since.
This trend continues, and an endless flow of rich and famous visits this amazing paradise to enjoy its rich history, smashing charm, impressive flora, great food and the incredible Blue Grotto.
While it is definitely worthwhile to spend here at least a few days, most of the tourists arrive in the morning from neighboring towns such as Sorrento, Positano, or city of Naples by ferry and depart by 4 – 5 p.m. with the last boats. It would be smart to prearrange a tour guide who will help you with timing and transfers to get the most out of your day. I highly recommend Tours of Capri, which helped me efficiently organize our recent trip with my group from Boston, who came to celebrate a milestone birthday as a multi-day series of events.
These what I believe are the most interesting things to do and see on the island if you are a bit short of time:
1. Blue Grotto.
Arrange to see the Blue Grotto, la Grotta Azzura, world-famous for its unique deep blue color of the water. It might be tricky as the cavern entrance into the grotto is narrow and small and in the case of high or rough waters, it will remain closed. But if the sea is calm, it definitely worth a try. You can reach it by bus or a tour boat and then get on a small wooden rowboat with a guide, who will bring you inside.
2. Mamma Mia! Road.
Take a ride along with the Mamma Mia! road to watch the incredible sea views and take IG-worthy pictures – but make sure you hire an experienced local driver to take care of you.
3. Anacapri.
Visit Anacapri – the charming town located in the upper part of the island. It’s full of delightful souvenir and clothing shops, little restaurants, and picturesque trails among the olive trees, wisteria, pines, and lemons. I bought a charming linen dress while shopping there and enjoyed tasting Limoncello, made of the famous aromatic Capri lemons.
4. Carthusia Perfumes.
Venture into the fabulous perfume shop, Carthusia, which sells locally produced and totally unique perfumes, lotions, and soaps. Try different samples to select the one you would buy - and you would never regret it. The personnel are knowledgeable and kind and will help you to make the right choice.
5. Monte Solaro.
From Anacapri, take a chair lift to go to the Monte Solaro – the highest panoramic point of Capri. The lift brings you up and during this leisure 12 min ride you would admire the ever-changing views of the sea, Mount Vesuvius, the neighboring island of Ischia while listening to the numerous birds singing along the way. On the top of the Monte Solaro, enjoy the breathtaking views, say “Hi” to the statue of Emperor Augustus, take pictures and drink an Aperol Spritz. I would definitely tell that the Monte Solaro part was a highlight of my recent trip.
6. Town of Capri.
Take the ride to Capri, the bustling little capital of the island, spend some time in its quaint couture shops, and take lunch in one of its great restaurants. I would recommend Buca di Bacco, with its great pizzas and pasta and fast friendly service. After all, you still have a lot to do and to see!
7. Piazzetta.
Enjoy an espresso or gelato while sitting and people watching in La Piazzetta, a world-famous square with the renowned Clock Tower, the Torre del Orologio.
8. Funicular Ride.
Take a funicular to return to Marina Grande, the Capri’s main port where the tourists’ ferries drop off and pick up the passengers.
9. Faraglioni.
Take a ride on a small boat around the island to admire its famous sea rocks trio, Faraglioni di Capri: Stella, di Mezzo and di Fuori. Kiss your love when passing through for the good luck and look for the White and Green Grottos and red coral’s formation.
10. Think about returning to spend a couple of days on the island, to further explore and enjoy it to the fullest. Or consider getting engaged or married in Capri, for a really magical, unforgettable experience. We would love to help you to plan it here!
