First of all, welcome.

If you are reading this article, chances are that you are considering getting married in Italy. And that alone warms my heart.

Every time I receive an inquiry for Italy, I feel a genuine sense of excitement. Although I have lived and worked in several countries, Italy is the place I fell in love with many years ago, and in my eyes, it remains the best place in the world to celebrate a wedding.

Not simply because of the scenery, the architecture, or the extraordinary cuisine, but because Italy invites us to slow down. It encourages us to gather around a table, spend time with the people we love most, and celebrate life's most meaningful moments with intention and joy.

To me, luxury is not necessarily defined by extravagant spending.

True luxury can be found in the beauty that Italy offers so effortlessly. It is the privilege of sharing a meal under the stars with family and friends. It is the feeling of being temporarily removed from the worries of everyday life. It is having the time and space to focus on one another, celebrate your union in a meaningful way, and begin married life surrounded by beauty, warmth, and the people who matter most.

At the same time, weddings everywhere have become more expensive over the past several years, and Italy is no exception.

As a wedding planner, I believe one of my responsibilities is to provide couples with realistic expectations. Not to discourage them, but to help them make informed decisions and create celebrations that reflect both their vision and their priorities.

The purpose of this guide is not to define what a wedding should cost. Every celebration is unique, and no two couples share exactly the same priorities.

Instead, my goal is to provide a transparent and practical framework that will help you better understand the investment involved in planning a luxury destination wedding in Italy in 2028.

I hope this guide will help you begin your planning journey with confidence, clarity, and excitement for everything that lies ahead.

Why Comparing Wedding Costs in Italy Is So Difficult

One of the reasons couples often find conflicting information online is that there is no such thing as a "typical" wedding in Italy. Even celebrations with the same guest count can differ dramatically in cost depending on the destination, venue requirements, number of events, level of design, entertainment, and the overall guest experience envisioned by the couple.

Some properties require multi-night stays, exclusive use, or additional hosted events, while others offer greater flexibility. Priorities also vary. One couple may dream of elaborate floral installations and fireworks, while another may place greater emphasis on exceptional cuisine, music, and quality time with loved ones.

For these reasons, comparing wedding costs in Italy is rarely an apples-to-apples exercise, and broad averages often provide little meaningful guidance.

Why I Prefer to Discuss Wedding Costs Per Guest

Many articles attempt to provide a single "average" wedding budget for Italy. In my experience, this approach is rarely helpful.

Even among weddings with the same guest count, venue requirements, event design, entertainment, and guest experience priorities can vary dramatically.

For this reason, I often find it more useful to think in terms of investment per guest.

For the purposes of this comparison, the estimates below assume:

  • 100 guests

  • A welcome party

  • A wedding day celebration

  • Professional photography and videography

  • Floral design and décor

  • Bridal beauty services

  • Lighting and production

  • Entertainment

  • Transportation

  • Wedding planning services

Guest accommodations are not included.

Tuscany

Although I plan weddings throughout Italy, Tuscany continues to hold a special place in my heart. Florence is one of the cities I return to again and again, both professionally and personally. For many couples, the appeal extends well beyond the wedding day itself. Tuscany offers an opportunity to immerse guests in one of Italy's most culturally rich regions while celebrating in an atmosphere that feels both elegant and authentic.

One of Tuscany's greatest strengths is the breadth of options available. Some venues are ideal for intimate gatherings, while others comfortably accommodate celebrations with more than one hundred guests.

Certain properties require full buyouts and multi-night stays, while others offer greater flexibility. Catering policies, transportation logistics, music curfews, and accommodation capacity can vary significantly from one property to another. As a result, two weddings with the same guest count can have very different budgets depending on the venue selected.

For a luxury destination wedding in Tuscany, budgets typically begin around €1,300-€1,500 per guest and can easily reach €2,000-€2,500 per guest depending on the venue, level of design, entertainment, and overall guest experience.

One of Tuscany's greatest advantages is the remarkable variety of properties available.

There are charming three-star venues with surprisingly reasonable rental fees, elegant four-star hotels that have invested heavily in improving their facilities, and exceptional five-star properties whose level of service and exclusivity command significantly higher prices.

The difference between four- and five-star properties can be substantial, particularly when exclusive catering, food and beverage minimums, and full or partial buyouts are involved.

Amalfi Coast

When discussing the Amalfi Coast, I include not only Amalfi, Positano, Praiano, and Ravello, but also Sorrento, Capri, and Ischia.

Few places in the world rival the beauty and atmosphere of this region. The dramatic sea views, bright blue waters, and relaxed vacation spirit make it easy to understand why so many couples dream of getting married here.

At the same time, the geography that makes the area so spectacular also creates logistical challenges that inevitably influence costs.

Narrow roads, steep staircases, limited access, and the physical demands placed on vendors and staff make production considerably more complex. Transportation, deliveries, setup, and food and beverage service all come at a premium.

Among these destinations, Sorrento often offers particularly attractive opportunities, combining extraordinary charm with comparatively easier logistics.

For selected venue-only settings, budgets may occasionally begin around €1,200 per guest. However, most luxury celebrations on the Amalfi Coast today start closer to €2,000 per guest and can easily exceed €2,500 depending on the property, production requirements, and overall guest experience.

Despite the additional costs, many couples ultimately decide that the beauty and atmosphere of the Amalfi Coast are unlike anything else in the world.

Puglia

Located in Southern Italy between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Puglia has emerged as one of Italy's most exciting wedding destinations.

Although it is still developing its reputation among international couples, the region has evolved at an impressive pace and continues to attract those seeking authenticity, exceptional cuisine, and spacious properties perfectly suited to multi-day celebrations.

Compared to some of Italy's more established destinations, Puglia currently offers attractive value. Venue rental fees are often lower, and many properties provide generous outdoor spaces, excellent weather backup options, and fewer restrictions regarding music and event timing.

The region is easy to navigate, offers beautiful beaches and beach clubs, and maintains a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that many couples find irresistible.

For a luxury destination wedding in Puglia, budgets may begin around €1,000 per guest. However, five-star properties are fully comparable to luxury hotels throughout Italy, and costs increase significantly when buyouts are required.

Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore and its smaller neighbor, Lake Orta, have long been beloved by European travelers, yet they remain relatively undiscovered by many American couples.

Having planned weddings and events there, I believe these lakes deserve far more attention.

Their proximity to Milan Malpensa Airport and convenient rail connections make them exceptionally accessible. Elegant villas, grand hotels, Alpine scenery, and picturesque lakeside towns create an atmosphere that feels sophisticated without being overly formal.

Compared with some of Italy's more publicized lake destinations, Lake Maggiore often offers greater flexibility and excellent value.

For a luxury destination wedding, budgets generally start at €1,300- €1,500 per guest and can increase substantially depending on venue selection, production requirements, and guest experience priorities.

Whether celebrating aboard a private boat, enjoying cocktails overlooking the lake, or gathering for dinner in the gardens of a historic villa, couples quickly understand why this region has captivated travelers for generations.

A Final Note

No destination has a true upper limit.

A wedding budget is ultimately shaped by the choices made regarding venue, hospitality, floral design, entertainment, production, and guest experience.

Two weddings with the same guest count in the same destination may differ by hundreds of thousands of euros.

The purpose of these estimates is not to define what a wedding should cost, but to provide a realistic starting point for planning conversations.

Luxury is deeply personal.

For some couples, it means fireworks, elaborate floral installations, and world-class entertainment. For others, it means gathering loved ones around a beautifully set table, slowing down, and sharing unforgettable moments in one of the most remarkable countries in the world.

Whatever your vision may be, my hope is that this guide helps you approach the planning process with realistic expectations, confidence, and excitement for the journey ahead.

And if Italy is calling your name, I would be delighted to help you bring that dream to life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $100,000 enough for a luxury wedding in Italy?

In short, not anymore.

A decade ago, $100,000 represented a substantial budget for a luxury destination wedding in Italy. Today, rising venue costs, food and beverage prices, labor expenses, and production requirements have changed the landscape considerably.

While every celebration is different, couples planning a multi-day wedding for 100 guests should generally expect to invest significantly more.

What is a realistic budget for a 100-guest wedding in Italy?

For a luxury destination wedding with a welcome party and wedding day celebration, a realistic starting point today is approximately €120,000, excluding guest accommodations.

The final investment depends on many factors, including the destination, venue requirements, level of design, entertainment, and overall guest experience.

Which Italian destination offers the best value for a luxury wedding?

There is no universal answer, but Tuscany continues to offer one of the widest ranges of venues and some of the most experienced wedding professionals in the country.

Puglia currently offers particularly attractive value, while Lake Maggiore remains one of Italy's hidden gems. The right destination ultimately depends on your priorities, guest count, and vision.

Is the Amalfi Coast more expensive than Tuscany?

Generally speaking, yes.

Transportation, logistics, labor, and food and beverage costs are often higher on the Amalfi Coast. However, exceptions certainly exist, and some Tuscan properties can rival or exceed the costs of prestigious venues in Ravello, Capri, or Positano.

Is Puglia more affordable than Tuscany?

At present, couples can often find excellent value in Puglia. Venue rental fees are generally lower, and many properties offer greater flexibility.

At the same time, luxury five-star properties in Puglia are comparable in price to luxury properties elsewhere in Italy. As with any destination, the specific venue often matters more than the region itself.

How far in advance should we book our wedding venue?

The sooner, the better.

Most couples begin planning 18 months before the wedding. Booking two years in advance generally provides a wider selection of dates and properties and allows couples to spread payments over a longer period while making thoughtful decisions without feeling rushed.

And then, somehow, time flies, and your wedding day is suddenly just around the corner.

Do guests typically pay for their own accommodations?

Yes.

While some couples choose to host immediate family members or special guests, most destination wedding guests are expected to pay for their own accommodations and travel expenses.

Clear communication and a range of hotel options help guests plan accordingly.

What costs are most often overlooked?

Transportation is one of the most frequently underestimated categories.

Couples are also often surprised by overtime charges, additional open-bar hours, and the temptation to add extra floral arrangements, lighting, entertainment, or other enhancements as the wedding approaches.

The closer the wedding gets, the easier it becomes to fall in love with one more beautiful idea.

Can we have a luxury wedding in Italy without renting an entire hotel?

Absolutely.

Many exceptional properties offer venue-only options or allow weddings without a complete buyout. Full exclusivity can be wonderful, but it is certainly not the only way to create an unforgettable celebration.

What is included in a typical Italian catering proposal?

Although every caterer is different, many proposals include cocktail hour food and beverages, seated dinner service, tables, chairs, linens, tableware, service staff, and often coffee and wine with dinner.

Additional food stations, show cooking, premium open bars, tiered cakes, cigar bars, and specialty experiences are usually priced separately.

How much should we budget for flowers and décor?

Even relatively understated celebrations involve a certain minimum investment in floral design.

In my experience, floral budgets often begin around €6,000, while many couples spend €12,000-18,000 or more for the wedding day.

Large installations, hanging designs, chandeliers, lounge furniture, specialty lighting, and custom dance floors can increase this figure substantially.

How much does wedding entertainment cost in Italy?

There is no single answer.

Some couples are perfectly happy with a DJ handling the entire celebration. Others incorporate live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, followed by a band for dinner and dancing.

String quartets, electric violins, saxophonists, professional singers, live painters, acrobats, fireworks, gelato carts, and mozzarella-making experiences are just some of the many possibilities available.

Entertainment is one of the most personal aspects of a wedding and can vary enormously depending on the atmosphere a couple wishes to create.

What luxury extras should we budget for?

Many couples underestimate the impact of the smaller details.

Common additions include lighting and production, fireworks, custom favors, welcome gifts, bespoke stationery, lounge furniture, after-party entertainment, transportation, and hospitality support across multiple days.

These enhancements can elevate the guest experience significantly, but they are best considered early rather than added at the last minute.

How much does a destination wedding planner in Italy cost?

Some planners work with a flat fee structure, while others charge a percentage of the overall wedding budget.

Fees vary considerably depending on the scope of services, the complexity of the celebration, and the planner's level of experience.

Choosing a planner should never be based solely on price. The right planner can save couples countless hours, reduce stress, and help them make informed decisions throughout the planning process.

What makes a luxury wedding feel truly luxurious?

Surprisingly, it is not always the things that cost the most.

To me, luxury is not defined by extravagance alone. It is the feeling of being fully present. It is sharing exceptional meals with family and friends, lingering over conversations, watching guests dance under the stars, and experiencing the joy of being together in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Those are often the memories that last long after the flowers have faded and the music has ended.
